Almost makes you wonder why it bothers with petals at all...

I appreciate comments and visits but have discovered that replying sometimes takes great amounts of time so please forgive me if I don't answer your comments. I will very likely visit your page though....

It almost looks like that's the way pine cones grow. ;-) It must be covered with many seeds and then they are released in the wind.

@Steven: Believe it or not, it would seem to be simple to get these in a photo but I had an unbelievably difficult time getting the focus nearly right.
