This is a view of what happened to many of the trees in the crosstimbers after a rather large winter ice accumulation. This abandoned highway leads to a local lake. These limbs (mostly willows in this case) came down after being overloaded with ice. All trees were affected and for three days or so, the forest sounded as if there were cannons going off every few seconds as limbs broke and old trees fell. I'll never forget it. It was quite fun navigating this old road...
Wow! the power of nature, I'm not sure that anything like this, caused by ice has happened where I live, I'm not sure it gets cold enough but I could be wrong! A great capture Earnest.

Good photo to illustrate your story. We were once snowed in for a couple of days in Massachusetts, with heavy snow and ice. Trees fell across the road blocking our exit in both directions. Branches and trunks breaking sounded like shots, as you say. We, too, will never forget the experience.

This is amazing! I can imagine what it sounded like, years ago we had a bad ice storm and all you could hear were the trees breaking in the woods! Very scary! No heat, no power! Excellent shot!

That’s an amazing event of Nature you relate there and, yes, I can imagine those sounds in the cold air. Will be interesting to see how the trees recover and/or how the landscape changes in the seasons ahead.

I love getting out into places and scenes like this as much as I like photographing them. That's quite a powerful image, and I bet it was a fun day going out there.

@Eric Fry: I'm in complete agreement. It's sort of like fishing, the being there and the exploration are 99% of the fun...
