This is a native plant that I've tentatively identified as a native black or choke cherry. They were used by the indigenous Americans to make pemmican and other foods but either one must have the pit removed or be cooked to eliminate certain alkaloids and acids.. from which the choke cherry got its name. I was delighted to find this little tree growing on my property. I'll be much more careful when mowing nearby now.
