This (portable) engine is nothing more than a single piston engine of huge proportions. Yes there were even bigger ones available - up to four to five times as big. It was used to power a pumpjack...

Having grown up in Drumright, Oklahoma and moved to the big city where these things were not in operation, it took me years to be able to sleep without hearing the constant chugging and occasional explosive backfire from surrounding wells. Nowadays they are electrically powered in most cases and the engine noises have abated....
