Awakening of the Forest King
(Flowers for Your Hair)

In late winter I walked among the ghosts along a lost highway
Thinking I heard the departed speak while my forest slept as dead.
I cannot find that which I seek. I could not find what I had sought,
I could not find it there, for there were none where the bodies lay
Of flowers for your hair.

As apparitions whispered and spirits walked with me a warm mist
Touched my cheek as through the foggy shroud a hand of sunlight
Warmed me there came a parting cloud. Soon my cloak was heavy
My bones warmed by sunny heat, perhaps my quest not empty I might
find what I seek.

I stepped upon a fallen log, heard thunder from the sky
An announcement of a coming spring, raindrops in my eyes.
An awakening of a sleeping form, the rising of the Forest King,
A crown of roots and emerald leaves, of stature tall and strong, fearsome, gentle, ancient.
I feared I had done wrong.

High above great limbs spread and waved a warming wind,
Then I heard the forest sing about the winters end
Flowers grew beneath him, colors deep and clear
Fragrance wafted to and fro from petals pure and fair
So my friend, the Forest King, gave flowers for your hair!
