Things I'll Leave Behind - Time

In the absence of enough photos to keep posting as I like I have decided to enter an experimental phase of introspective, Things I'll leave Behind... or things that have meaning to me that might be wondered about someday...

This is a clock I made from a crashed 300 megabyte disk drive that was about the size of a clothes washer... The clock (except for the works and numbers) is made entirely from the parts of a disk assembly that weighed about 80 pounds and consists of one of the platters (approximately 14 inches in diameter) from the crashed unit and other parts... A memory of my early days in computers.

@The Dark Dude: Thanks very much.. really appreciated. I made two of these. The one I gave to my son had the bare aluminum rings where the disk head actually crashed... I'll certainly consider your request provided the reaper sends me an eviction notice first...

Hi Ernie, good to see you following a new creative path. You must be a good engineer to make a clock like this, I think it's very special - it's unique, and valuable.

You made this clock from a trashed hard disk!!! Simply unbelievable work as you have come up with a amazing clock. Great work with the clock and the photo. Kudos!!!

@Ravi: Depending on the model of the drive, there could be up to 12 platters like this available for playing with -- and yes, there came a time when these hard drives were discarded just like the ones we have now. Those were the days when a head crash was really a crash!

@Anita: My career pretty much spanned the computer revolution from giant "minicomputers" and storage devices with a "whopping" 64 KB of 12 bit core memory to terabyte disks that you can hold in your hand and petabyte storage systems with "wide" memory up to 256 K per word... That's a revolution!
