Things I'll Leave Behind - A Petrified Wood Knot

Posted by Earnest (Oklahoma, United States) on 1 May 2009 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio.

From the early days of my career, collected near Vega, Texas in the Texas panhandle. As the story goes, a survey crew was laying out a seismic line in the windy, dusty, environment when they decided to have lunch and sat down on an old tree trunk. Some time later they noticed that they were sitting on petrified wood. When I and the seismic crew came along later I collected this knot from one of the stone branches. Also found in the vicinity were the teeth of dinosaurs and even an entire backbone peeking from the surface of an arroyo -- this we didn't disturb but reported the location to a local university. Yeah, I picked up rocks instead of purchasing trinkets for souvenirs -- it never made much sense to me to buy something made in China, Taiwan, or Japan, as a remembrance.

I hope you enjoyed the viewing... Have a great day!
